Multimodal imaging for in vivo testing of selected biomolecules

Invasive microbial infections are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Early and accurate diagnosis is the key factor of a successful treatment. Siderophores are low-molecular-mass molecules that are produced by almost all microorganisms and used for iron acquisition. Iron is an essential nutrient for many microorganisms and its need is increased during active infection. Replacing iron with suitable radionuclide, such as gallium-68, could enable the detection of microbial infections by means of molecular imaging.
